Natural Alternatives for Treating Cystitis

Cystitis is defined as inflammation of the bladder. It is most often caused by a bacterial infection and, if not treated properly, the infection can spread to the kidneys. Most common symptoms of cystitis include pain in the pelvic region, burning upon urinating and light fever. According to the Mayo Clinic, antibiotics are almost always necessary to treat cystitis, but there are natural steps you can do at home to assist and prevent the condition.
  1. Home Remedies

    • The use of heat can help minimize the symptoms associated with cystitis. The best way to use heat is to put a heating pad over your lower abdomen. Also, soaking in a hot bath for 15 to 20 minutes a day can cut down on inflammation and pain. Drinking plenty of fluids is also important since frequent urination can help flush out bacteria. However, stay away from anything that can inflame or irritate the bladder. Beverages that can aggravate cystitis include soda, coffee, citrus juice and alcohol.

    Cranberry Juice

    • While cranberry juice does have properties that can fight off infections of the bladder and the urinary tract, usually the juice by itself is not enough to cure cystitis. According to the Mayo Clinic, while cranberry juice will not hurt your bladder, it needs to be supplemented with medication to be effective. People on medication that thins the blood, such as Coumadin, also need to be careful when drinking excessive amounts of cranberry juice as it can interfere with the medication and lead to bleeding.

    Hygiene

    • The best way to prevent cystitis is to practice good hygiene. If you are a woman, wipe starting from the front and working back after a bowel movement to prevent bacteria from entering the vagina. After you have intercourse, empty the contents of your bladder as soon as possible to flush out bacteria that have entered the vaginal canal. It is also important to wash the vagina and anus daily to fight off the infection. However, vigorous scrubbing can make the condition worse.
