What Are the Causes of a Leaking Bladder?

A leaking bladder, also known as incontinence, occurs when a person is unable to control the bladder. There are several reasons for a leaking bladder; it is these reasons that determine the type of treatment.
  1. Weak Muscles

    • Many bladder control issues are the result of weak muscles, which can be stretched and become weak as a result of childbirth and pregnancy. Because weak muscles cause the bladder to sag, the urethra may open as a result, allowing urine to leak.

    Nerve Damage

    • If nerves are damaged, they may send signals to the bladder at the wrong time. As a result, a bladder spasm may push urine out. The conditions that can cause nerve damage include Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, stroke or diabetes.

    Medicines, Alcohol and Caffeine

    • Leaks can also occur when muscles or nerves are affected by stimulant medications, diuretics, alcohol or caffeine. Nerves can be stimulated or relaxed from certain substances, and this can cause leaks.

    Infection

    • Urinary tract infections can also cause a leaking bladder. The bladder's nerves can become irritated and squeeze involuntarily, causing leaks.

    Obesity

    • Bladder leaks may also be caused by excess weight pressing on the bladder.
