Interstitial Cystitis & Back Pain

Interstitial cystitis (IC), sometimes called painful bladder syndrome, is a chronic pain condition that is difficult to diagnose and treat. Back pain, usually in the lower back just above the pelvis, is part of IC pain and tends to be severe.
  1. What Is Interstitial Cystitis?

    • Interstitial cystitis affects the nerves that signal bladder fullness; you feel like you need to urinate much more often, and the lining of the bladder is usually inflamed or irritated. Severe back, abdominal and bladder pain result.

What Are the Causes of IC?

    • According to the Mayo Clinic, IC might be hereditary. Other possible causes are allergy, infection or autoimmune reactions, though these have not been proven.

What Are the Risk Factors for IC?

    • You are at greater risk for IC if you are a woman, are 40 or older and have other chronic pain disorders, such as fibromyalgia or irritable bowel syndrome. While some people are diagnosed with IC at a younger age, most are in their 40s or older.

What Are the Symptoms of IC?

    • Interstitial cystitis usually causes severe chronic pain in the lower abdomen and pelvic region, which includes the lower back. Other common symptoms of IC include the persistent, urgent need to urinate and frequent urination throughout the day and night.

    How Is IC Treated?

    • Pentosan is an oral drug that works by protecting the bladder wall against irritation. Your doctor may also recommend that you take antihistamines, ibuprofen or tricyclic antidepressants.
