Signs & Symptoms of UTI in Men

Although women experience urinary tract infections (UTI's) more frequently, men can contract painful infection. Understanding the signs and symptoms of urinary tract infections in men can help you recognize and seek prompt treatment for this potentially serious health condition.
  1. The Facts

    • Your urinary system includes your kidneys, ureters (tubes carrying urine to your bladder), bladder and urethra (tube that empties urine from your bladder). A urinary tract infection--usually caused by bacteria from your colon--occurs when you develop an infection in your urethra or bladder.

    Symptoms

    • You may not experience any symptoms, but common signs of a urinary tract infection in men can include burning during urination, cloudy urine, bloody or foul-smelling urine and excessive fatigue.

    Complications

    • If you experience a fever with other UTI symptoms, as well as nausea and vomiting, you may have developed a kidney infection, a serious complication that occurs when your UTI travels up your ureters to infect your kidneys.

    Diagnosis

    • According to the National Kidney and Urologic Diseases Information Clearinghouse, your doctor typically will test a sample of your urine for the presence of blood and bacteria to diagnose a UTI.

    Treatment

    • According to the Mayo Clinic, treatment for your UTI symptoms varies depending on your health and the type of bacteria causing your infection; options include antibiotics, such as amoxicillin and levofloxacin.
