Probiotics and Urinary Tract Infections

Urinary tract infections can affect the urinary systems of both men and women. The condition is generally treated with antibiotics; however, research has shown that probiotics may be effective in treating the illness.
  1. Probiotics

    • Probiotics are dietary supplements of live organisms that are used to improve overall health. Probiotics are used to improve intestinal health and are being tested as an alternative treatment for urinary tract infections.

    Treatment

    • Several studies conducted in the U.K. and the Netherlands have shown that probiotics have the potential to treat urinary tract infections. The oral and topical application of probiotics have been used in women suffering from urinary tract infections; results of the treatment have varied.

    Function

    • Probiotics are used to prevent the development of selective bacterial strains, restore balance to microbial flora and to enhance the body's defense system. Normal human bacterial flora helps to defend the body from urinary tract infection.

    Sources

    • Probiotics can be found naturally in yogurt, milk, fermented meat and cheese. Over-the-counter supplements are also used to administer probiotics orally.

    Safety

    • Oral consumption of probiotics is generally safe in people with strong immune systems. However, they are potentially harmful for critically ill patients.
