Foods to Cure UTI
Urinary tract infection (UTI) occurs when bacteria get into your urine, which is normally sterile. These bacteria (E coli) grow and travel upward into the bladder. While there are medications to treat urinary tract infections, certain foods can help cure them.-
Water
-
The first step in curing UTI is to drink plenty of water, especially those with electrolytes, as it flushes the bacteria from the urinary tract's walls. The water also rehydrates the body, while the electrolytes restore the minerals needed to boost the immune system.
Cranberries
-
Because natural acids are not filtered by the liver, the acidic quality of cranberries stops the growth of the bacteria that cause urinary tract infection. The juices also help dislodge the bacteria. This remedy has been researched and verified by Harvard Medical School, according to the UTI Report (see References).
Fiber Foods
-
Your diet should be high in fiber to help flush the urinary tract. Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables as these help maintain the urine's alkaline content. Also, parsley is a natural antiseptic for urinary tract infections.
Irritant Foods
-
A diet that includes foods like cheese, chocolate and dairy products should be avoided as they do not provide the nutrients necessary to combat urinary tract infections. Spicy foods, products containing caffeine and all carbonated drinks including soda pop should also be avoided. Refrain from smoking cigarettes and drinking alcoholic beverages, as these can weaken the immune system.
Considerations
-
Medical conditions can contribute to a urinary tract infection. Kidney stones, tract blockages, antibiotics that suppress the immune system and enlarged prostate glands can also trigger UTIs. If you have any of these, consult your doctor to determine the best treatment.
