Hydronephrosis Symptoms

Hydronephrosis is the blockage of urine flow in the kidney causing it to swell and become distended. The blockage is caused when an object obstructs a ureter, which drains urine from the kidneys to the bladder, or the ureter narrows. Hydronephrosis can causes problems with liver function if untreated.
  1. Gradual Hydronephrosis Symptoms - Pain

    • When the ureter gradually narrows, there may be few symptoms initially. As the ureter narrows, you may notice a substantial decrease in urine flow and a dull ache in the kidney region.

    Sudden Hydronephrosis Symptoms - Pain

    • The ureter may suddenly become blocked causing a complete stoppage of urine flow from to the bladder. This happens most commonly when a kidney stone becomes detached and cannot fit through the ureter. The main symptoms are intense pain in the kidney area and blood in the urine caused by the kidney stone.

    General Hydronephrosis Symptoms

    • Once the blockage has started to cause constant or intense pain, other symptoms may also begin. You may feel the urge to urinate but only produce a small amount. You may feel pain while urinating. You may feel nauseous and vomit.

    Hydronephrosis Treatment

    • Doctors may place a catheter to drain the bladder and relieve the pain, but treatment depends on what is causing the blockage. Kidney stones can be removed surgically or with the use of ultrasonic technology, which breaks up stones so they can pass through the body. Antibiotics may be prescribed if the blockage is caused by infection. Stents are used to redirect the flow of urine.

    Hydronephrosis in Children

    • Hydronephrosis is a common problem in developing fetuses and newborns. The constriction of the ureter can also be caused by a birth defect or other medical problem. Blockages can usually be treated soon after birth with little chance of serious complications.

    Warning

    • Contact a doctor immediately if you have difficulty urinating or pain in the kidney region.
