Signs & Symptoms of Urinary Tract Infection in Men

Urinary tract infections (UTI) primarily attack females, but males are not excluded. Caused by exposure to E. coli, a UTI presents with sometimes subtle symptoms for males.
  1. Urination Symptoms

    • A burning sensation during urination is often the first recognized symptom of a UTI. Frequent urination, producing less output than normal for the patient, may also present as an early symptom.

    Pain

    • Discomfort or pain in the back and sides occurs when infection moves into the kidneys. Pelvic pressure or pain may also occur.

    Severe Symptoms

    • Confusion may occur when the infection becomes severe. Fever and nausea my also occur as the infection increases.

    Diagnosis

    • Your doctor may ask for a urinalysis to diagnosis the infection. The urinalysis will check for white blood cells in the urine, a sign of a UTI.

    Prevention

    • The consumption of adequate fluids is helpful in preventing urinary tract infections. Proper care and cleansing of the genital area may help males avoid becoming infected with E. coli.
