How to Relieve a UTI

Urinary tract infections, or UTIs, can develop in males and females. Typical symptoms include painful or burning urination, an urgent need to empty the bladder, and cloudy or foul-smelling urine. Infections develop when bacteria enters the urinary tract. Although painful and uncomfortable, most UTIs respond to medication and sufferers make a full recovery within three to seven days.

Instructions

    • 1

Make an appointment with your family practitioner if you suspect a UTI. If indeed you have one, he or she can give you a prescription for antibiotics.

    • 2

Take pain medication to relieve the lower abdominal and back pain UTIs often cause. Over-the-counter painkillers such as ibuprofen help with inflammation. Talk with a doctor or pharmacist before mixing medications of any kind.

    • 3

Apply a heating pad or take a hot bath to relieve pelvic pressure and pain.

    • 4

Drink plenty of water---at least eight glasses of a day---to cleanse your urinary tract and flush bacteria from your system.

    • 5

Consume cranberries in either supplement or juice form. Cranberries encourage urinary health and can relieve the symptoms of a UTI.

    • 6

Consume vitamin C supplements. Take 1,000 milligrams a day to improve your immune system and fight the infection.
