Symptoms of UTI in Babies

A urinary tract infection (UTI) occurs when harmful bacteria gets into the bladder or kidneys. UTIs are more common in baby boys than baby girls, according to the "Merck Manual" entry on the subject (see Resources). Urinary tract symptoms are not out of the ordinary for babies and small children. Recognizing the symptoms early can help get appropriate treatment started quickly. This can be difficult in infants who cannot tell you what is wrong, but if you have any concerns, speak to your child's pediatrician.

Fever

• A fever---due to the infection that is present in his body---is sometimes the only sign that a baby has a UTI.

Lack of Appetite

• Eating less than usual is a sign of a urinary infection in some babies. Keeping track of how long your baby nurses or how much she usually eats may help clarify when to bring her to the doctor.

Fatigue

• Fatigue and lethargy can be symptoms of UTIs in babies. Babies who are normally alert and playful but become lethargic and restless may be developing a infection.

Diarrhea

• Diarrhea is sometimes, but not always, a symptom of a urinary tract infection in babies. Infant diarrhea may be hard to differentiate from normally soft stools. An increase in bowel frequency is often a key factor.

Malodorous Urine

• A baby and small child who has developed a UTI may put out urine that smells foul or more pungent than usual.
