Causes of Frequent Nocturnal Urination
If you or your child over the age of five begin to experience bed-wetting, you may have a type of urinary incontinence called nocturnal incontinence. Losing control of your bladder while you sleep may cause you to be embarrassed and may wake you up afterwards, resulting in a lack of sleep. According to the Mayo Clinic and the National Library of Medicine, causes of frequent nocturnal urination include bladder disorders and certain medical conditions.-
Medications
-
If you take medications such as diuretics, lithium or too much vitamin D, you may have frequent nighttime urination due to over-production of urine.
Hormones
-
Changes in hormones during pregnancy, menopause or after childbirth may weaken the sphincter that closes your bladder, resulting in frequent nocturnal urination.
UTIs
-
Urinary tract infections (UTIs) may cause you to urinate during your sleep due to irritations to the muscles that control your bladder.
Bladder Disease
-
Weakening or damage of your bladder from cancer, stroke, Parkinson's Disease or multiple sclerosis may cause a loss of bladder control during the night.
Diabetes
-
Diabetes may cause urination during sleep in both children and adults, especially if the condition is not under control.
Sexual Abuse
-
Sexual abuse may cause nocturnal urination in children and adults as a result of injuries to the urinary tract.
