The doctor will determine the presence of a UTI by having you urinate in a cup and then testing the urine for infection and bacteria. Once the confirmation has been made you will start treatment. Most often UTI’s are treated with antibacterial drugs such as trimethoprim, bactrim, amoxicillin, and ampicillin. There are other drugs in this class also used. Most UTI’s will clear up within a few days, but doctors ask that patients continue on the medication for a week or two.
