What is creation of artificial opening between the urinary bladder and exterior body?

The creation of an artificial opening between the urinary bladder and the exterior body is known as a urinary diversion or urostomy. It is a surgical procedure typically performed when the normal pathway for urine to exit the body is obstructed, damaged, or diseased. During a urinary diversion, a section of the intestine is used to create a new pathway for urine to flow from the bladder to a specially constructed opening in the abdomen called a stoma. This allows urine to be drained into an external collection bag or device. Urinary diversions are commonly performed in cases of bladder cancer, neurogenic bladder, severe incontinence, and certain structural abnormalities of the urinary tract.
