Can a back problem cause urinary incontinence?
Back problems can sometimes lead to urinary incontinence, but it is not a common symptom. Urinary incontinence is more commonly associated with conditions that affect the urinary tract or nerves that control the bladder. However, some back conditions can put pressure on the nerves that control the bladder, leading to incontinence. For example, a herniated disc in the lower back can press on the cauda equina, a bundle of nerves that runs from the spinal cord to the bladder. This can cause a loss of bladder control, as well as other symptoms such as back pain, leg weakness, and numbness in the saddle area (the area between the buttocks). If you are experiencing urinary incontinence and back pain, it is important to see a doctor to rule out any underlying medical conditions.
