Can Latex Catheters Burn?
-
Normal Response
-
Although a burning sensation should not be a regular part of catheter use, you may occasionally experience a slight burning the first time you urinate after removing the catheter. This is normal and not a cause for concern. If the burning is intense or makes it difficult to urinate, speak to your physician.
Improper Use
-
Although you may feel pressure, the actual insertion and removal of a latex catheter should not cause a burning sensation. If it does, there is a possibility that you may have a blockage or other medical condition. However, the more likely cause is improper catheter technique. Whenever inserting or removing a catheter, you should use a water-based lubricant on both the catheter and surrounding genital area. Failure to do so can lead to chafing and burning.
Latex Allergy
-
If you feel a burning sensation while wearing a latex catheter, you may have a latex allergy. In many individuals, latex provokes an allergic reaction and irritates the tissue that it comes into contact with. If you are allergic to latex, you will be prescribed a catheter made from a different material and the symptoms should subside.
Urinary Tract Infection
-
Catheter use can cause urinary tract infections, particularly in women. If you experience a burning sensation every time that you urinate, the most likely culprit is an infection. Urinary tract infections can be treated with a standard course of antibiotics. To prevent infection, clean the genital area and catheter thoroughly before and after each use.
