How to Change Incontinence Pads

Incontinence is a condition where urine leaks from the bladder. It is caused by a variety of things which can include overactive bladder, effects of multiple pregnancies, genetics, or stress. More than 12 million Americans suffer from the condition, many of which require the use of incontinence products. Some people need additional assistance from family members or caregivers to change their incontinence pads.

      Some brands of incontinence pads are individually wrapped. Remove all packing so you are holding just the pad. Put it where it is easy to reach when the step comes when you will need it.

      Stand behind the person that you are changing the pad for. Undo and lower their pants and undergarments.

      Remove the soiled pad from their undergarments and throw it in the trash.

      Using a cleansing wipe, wipe down the skin area that may have be exposed to waste.

      Remove the adhesive strip from the new pad. The bottom will be sticky. Place the incontinence pad, sticky side down, in the undergarments.

      Pull up undergarments and clothing and fasten them.
