Getting a flu shot each year can protect you against three different strains of flu virus that are predicted to be the most common for that year. Certain people will be more at risk for contracting the flu than others such as young children, elderly, health care workers, pregnant women and those with weakened immune systems. Talk with your doctor to determine your risk factors for contracting the flu.
Preventive Measures
-
Avoid people who appear to be ill. When you're out in public, your chances for contracting the flu increase significantly. Carry hand sanitizer in case you happen to shake hands with someone or if you touch a lot of things that other people have touched. Wash your hands as frequently as possible. Talk to your kids about the importance of avoiding germs and washing their hands as well. Take advantage of sanitary wipes, and wipe off grocery cart handles to kill off any harmful germs. If you or your child appears to be ill, take the day off and stay home to rest, as this will help prevent the spread of a potential flu virus.
Invest in antibacterial soap and disinfectant sprays for your home. Wipe down surfaces with Lysol Disinfectant Wipes or Clorox Anywhere Hard Surface Spray to keep germs away. Keep yourself and your family clean to reduce the chances of germs getting in and causing anyone to become ill.
Avoid shared spaces as much as possible. Phones and keyboards in the office can be a great place for germs to transfer from one person to the next, so wipe them clean often. Also, don't share food and utensils with other people.
Eat a balanced diet and keep your body healthy with an exercise routine. A healthy immune system has a better chance of fighting off a flu virus. Take antibiotics if your doctor prescribes them to boost your immune system.
