The Best Cure for Warts

The best cures for warts depend on the type of wart. Warts on the feet, hands or genitals require different types of treatment. Some topical medications exist for curing warts, but surgery is more successful. Other types of treatment also reduce scarring after wart removal, blending it with the skin.
  1. Cantharidin

    • Cantharidin, a diluted chemical solution, is used to cure warts not located on the feet or genitals. Cantharidin is painted onto the wart and covered with a bandage after the wart dries. According to FamilyDoctor.org, cantharidin causes the wart to blister, raising the wart and making it easier to remove. Cantharidin causes mild pain within three to eight hours of application, but it subsides.

    Cryosurgery

    • Cryosurgery is also used to cure warts not located on the feet or genitals. Commonly known as freezing, the doctor applies liquid nitrogen to the wart, which freezes it. The wart dies, which allows the doctor to safely remove the wart.

    CO2 Laser Cautery Surgery

    • Foot warts are treated through CO2 laser cautery surgery. CO2 laser cautery surgery destroys the entire wart, preventing it from regrowing and eliminating its surface. According to the American Podiatric Medical Assocation, CO2 laser cautery surgery safely eliminates warts while reducing scarring.

    Other Types of Surgery

    • Genital warts are not curable, but there are several treatments available for removing the warts. According to womenshealth.gov, electric currents, light or laser therapy, cryosurgery, or cutting off the wart removes it temporarily. There is no guarantee it will reduce warts in the affected area, however. Because the virus cannot be eliminated, genital warts can reappear at any time.
