Valtrex for Prevention of Cold Sores
Valtrex is a one-day treatment medication that can be used in the treatment of genital herpes, shingles and cold sores, all forms of the herpes virus. Although there is no known cure for the herpes simplex 1 virus that causes cold sores, Valtrex may aid in the suppression of cold sores.-
Identifying an Oncoming Cold Sore
-
There are seven stages of cold sore development. The first stage, known as the prodromal stage, is when the beginning symptoms of a cold sore take effect. This can include pain, burning, itching or tingling at the area of a future cold sore. This is when a patient should see a doctor for a prescription for Valtrex. When taken in the prodromal stage, Valtrex has been shown to suppress a cold sore outbreak.
How Valtrex Works
-
Valtrex, also known as valacyclovir, contains aciclo-GTP, which has been shown to inhibit the viral cells in the body. Its properties can actually incorporate into a virus and prevent its further growth. While it does not heal viruses, it does prevent activity and is more readily absorbed by the body than other herpes treatments, such as aciclovir (more commonly known as Zovirax).
Dosage and Effects
-
Once prescribed, Valtrex is taken in two doses: 2 grams every 12 hours. If taken in the prodromal stage, Valtrex can potentially inhibit the cold sore's appearance. Even if the medication is not taken in the prodromal stage, it can still lessen the pain and duration of the cold sore.
If a person experiences frequent cold sore outbreaks, a physician may prescribe a refillable prescription in order to allow patients to obtain the prescription at the first onset of cold sore symptoms.
