What Enterovirus
Enteroviruses are a group of small, single-stranded RNA viruses that belong to the family Picornaviridae. There are more than 100 different enterovirus serotypes that can cause a wide range of infections in humans, including:
* The common cold
* Hand, foot, and mouth disease
* Viral meningitis
* Polio
* Myocarditis
* Pericarditis
* Encephalitis
Enteroviruses are spread through contact with an infected person's feces or saliva. They can also be spread through contact with contaminated surfaces or objects. Enterovirus infections are most common in the summer and fall.
Symptoms of enterovirus infection can vary depending on the serotype of the virus. Some enteroviruses only cause mild symptoms, such as a runny nose and sore throat. Others can cause more severe symptoms, such as fever, vomiting, and diarrhea. Some enterovirus infections can even be fatal.
There is no specific treatment for enterovirus infection. Treatment is supportive and includes measures to relieve symptoms and prevent dehydration. Most enterovirus infections will resolve on their own within a few weeks.
There are some things you can do to help prevent enterovirus infection, such as:
* Washing your hands frequently with soap and water
* Avoiding contact with people who are sick
* Not sharing food or drinks with someone who is sick
* Cleaning and disinfecting surfaces that may be contaminated with the virus
If you have any symptoms of enterovirus infection, it is important to see your doctor so that you can be tested and treated.
