When did Ebola happen?

The first Ebola virus outbreak occurred in 1976 in what is now the Democratic Republic of Congo (formerly Zaire). The outbreak occurred in a village near the Ebola River, which gave the virus its name. The second outbreak occurred in what is now South Sudan, also in 1976. Since then, there have been several outbreaks of Ebola virus disease in Africa.
