Chronic wasting disease (CWD) is a transmissible spongiform encephalopathy (TSE) affecting cervids, such as deer, elk, and moose. TSEs are a group of fatal neurodegenerative diseases that are caused by prions, which are abnormal forms of a normal protein found in the brain.
