What causes viral encephalopathy?
Viral encephalopathy is a brain inflammation caused by a virus. The inflammation can be caused by different types of viruses, such as the herpes simplex virus, the measles virus, the rubella virus, the mumps virus, and the enteroviruses.
The virus can enter the brain through the bloodstream or through direct contact with the brain tissue. Once in the brain, the virus can cause inflammation and damage to the brain cells, which can lead to a variety of symptoms, including:
* Fever
* Headache
* Stiff neck
* Nausea and vomiting
* Confusion
* Seizures
* Coma
Viral encephalopathy can be a serious condition and can lead to permanent brain damage or even death. Treatment for viral encephalopathy is supportive and may include:
* Antiviral medications
* Corticosteroids
* Intravenous fluids
* Mechanical ventilation
In some cases, surgery may be necessary to remove damaged brain tissue.
