Why were Jews persecuted for the black plague?

Jews were not the only ones persecuted during the Black Plague, but they were especially targeted because of existing prejudices and conspiracy theories that blamed them for the disease. There were also economic factors, as many people owed debts to Jewish moneylenders and used the plague as an opportunity to cancel these debts.
