Signs & Symptoms of Viral Pneumonia

Viruses such as influenza cause viral pneumonia. This type of pneumonia is different from bacterial pneumonia, which is caused by a bacterial infection of the lungs. Those with a weak immune system are at an increased risk of viral pneumonia, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. Doctors use the symptoms, along with chest X-rays, to make a diagnosis of the condition.
  1. Fever and Chills

    • Viral pneumonia symptoms are the same in the early stages as for all types of pneumonia, according to the University of Virginia Health System. Fever and chills are common symptoms for pneumonia and influenza. Pneumonia can become a life-threatening situation for patients who have other medical conditions, and doctors should treat it promptly.

    Cough

    • Infected lungs produce a cough as the body attempts to clear the airways. Pneumonia produces a cough that is similar to bronchitis. A chronic cough that does not clear up within a few days may be a sign of viral pneumonia, and further testing is needed to determine the diagnosis.

    Shortness of Breath

    • Patients with viral pneumonia may have difficulty breathing, shortness of breath and wheezing, according to the University of Virginia Health System.

    Muscle Aches and Joint Stiffness

    • Pain in the chest, muscles and joints are symptoms of viral pneumonia. Patients may experience pain in the chest and back when taking a breath. A doctor will perform a chest X-ray and blood tests to determine the cause of the symptoms.

    Fatigue

    • While the body is fighting viral pneumonia, the patient will experience tiredness and fatigue.

    Headache

    • Viral pneumonia can cause headaches and other flu-like symptoms, according to Penn State Hershey Milton S. Hershey Medical Center.
