What does plavix do?
Plavix (clopidogrel) belongs to a group of medications called thienopyridines. It works by preventing the formation of blood clots. It is used to reduce the risk of:- heart attacks
- strokes
- heart disease caused by blocked arteries (peripheral artery disease)
- serious complications in people who have had surgery to place a stent (small metal device) to treat a narrowed blood vessel
Plavix works by blocking the action of a substance in the body called adenosine diphosphate (ADP). ADP helps blood cells called platelets to stick together and form clots. By blocking the action of ADP, Plavix helps to keep platelets from forming clots.
