How to Use Salicyclic Acid to Treat Flat Warts

Although no single treatment is completely effective in treating all warts, salicylic acid has been shown to be the most effective treatment for the removal of common, plantar and flat warts, and is generally recommended as the first step in treatment. Salicylic acid is the active ingredient in many over-the-counter wart-removal products. There are different methods of application depending on the product. Gels, creams and patches are all common applications that you can find at your local drugstore or pharmacy.

Instructions

    • 1

Wash the affected part of the body with warm water and soap. You can also soak the wart in warm water for up to five minutes to help soften the skin. Dry the area thoroughly before applying the salicylic acid compound.

    • 2

Apply the gel, cream, liquid or patch to the wart as recommended by the manufacturer or by your physician. Generally, you apply just one or two drops of liquid or a small bead of gel to the wart and allow the product to dry. If using a patch, remove the backing paper and apply the patch so that the medication is centered directly over the wart.

    • 3

Apply the salicylic acid product once or twice daily, as recommended by your physician. Continue to apply once or twice daily for up to 12 weeks or until the wart is gone. Patches are indicated for use every 48 hours until the wart clears up, or for up to 12 weeks.

Consult your physician if the wart does not clear up within 12 weeks. He may recommend another treatment or may give you further instructions.
