Types of Warts in the Mouth

Warts in the mouth (oral warts) are caused by human papillomavirus (HPV). They can be contracted by participation in oral sex, kissing and poor hygiene. They are more common in individuals with compromised immune systems, such as those with HIV/AIDS.

    • Oral warts have a variety of appearances. There is usually a small number of warts present at once. They can be flat or raised, rough or smooth, large or small.

    • Warts in the mouth are usually very small. A typical person talking to someone with oral warts probably wouldn't notice them.

    • Oral warts are usually painless, but should be treated immediately. They are highly contagious, so prolonging an outbreak can cause infection in others.

    • Physicians can treat specific types of warts found in the mouth. But because HPV has no cure, the virus stays in the body and recurring outbreaks are possible.
