Types of Neck Warts

Warts are tumor-like growths that occur throughout the body and are caused by HPV, or the Human Papillomavirus. In general, warts are very contagious, and can be passed on from person to person through use of infected materials like towels and shoes.
  1. Types

    • Neck warts usually occur in two different types: common warts and flat warts. Common warts are often gray or yellow in color and are rough in texture, while flat warts are smooth and appear in darker hues such as red and brown.

    Size

    • Common warts appear slightly larger than flat warts due to their rough texture and larger diametric size. Click the link in the Resources section to learn more about these size differences.

    Effects

    • These types of neck warts are generally asymptomatic, and cause no harm to the patient. However, slight pain can be associated with common warts depending on their location on the body, such as the hands or feet.

    Misconceptions

    • Many people believe that warts are contracted by handling amphibians like frogs, toads and salamanders. In actuality, warts are caused by a viral infection.

    Prevention/Solution

    • Flat warts can be treated with daily use of topical creams such as Tretinoin and Imiquimod, while invasive procedures like electrocautery and cryosurgery are more effective for common warts.
