Why are woolen blankets not used in operation theatres?

Woolen blankets are not used in operation theatres due to several reasons:

1. Sterilization: Woolen blankets are challenging to sterilize effectively due to their composition and texture. The high temperatures and chemical treatments required for proper sterilization can damage the wool fibers, making it non-sterile. In contrast, synthetic blankets are more easily sterilized using various methods such as autoclave, steam, and chemical disinfection.

2. Microfiber shedding: Woolen blankets shed tiny microfibers that can disperse in the air and settle on surfaces within the operating room. These microfibers can carry bacteria and contaminants, posing a risk for surgical site infections. Synthetic blankets, on the other hand, shed fewer fibers and are less likely to contribute to contamination.

3. Lint accumulation: Woolen blankets can accumulate lint, which can create an environment for bacteria and microorganisms to thrive. This can increase the risk of surgical site infections. Lint from synthetic blankets is less likely to accumulate and is more easily removed.

4. Heat regulation: Woolen blankets are warm and insulating, which may not be ideal for the controlled temperature environment required in operation theaters. Synthetic blankets are more breathable and allow better temperature regulation, reducing the risk of overheating during surgical procedures.

5. Flammability: Woolen blankets are more flammable compared to synthetic blankets made of materials like polyester or nylon. In an environment where there is a risk of fire or electrostatic discharge, synthetic blankets provide better safety.

6. Electrostatic charge: Woolen blankets can generate electrostatic charge when rubbed or moved, potentially causing discomfort or interference with medical devices. Synthetic blankets are less prone to static electricity, reducing the potential for such problems.

For all these reasons, woolen blankets are not considered appropriate for use in operation theatres. Synthetic blankets that can be effectively sterilized, generate minimal lint, and provide better temperature regulation and safety are preferred in this critical setting.
