How can you get tb?
Tuberculosis (TB) is a contagious disease that is caused by bacteria called Mycobacterium tuberculosis. The bacteria usually attack the lungs, but they can also spread to other parts of the body.
TB is spread through the air when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or speaks. The bacteria can be inhaled by anyone who is in close contact with an infected person.
TB is not easy to contract. You must have prolonged and close contact with an infected person in order to be at risk of getting the disease.
Some people are more at risk of getting TB than others. These include:
* People who have been in close contact with someone who has TB
* People who live in or have traveled to countries where TB is common
* People who have a weakened immune system, such as those with HIV/AIDS, diabetes, or cancer
* People who are taking certain medications, such as corticosteroids or immunosuppressive drugs
If you think you may have been exposed to TB, it is important to see your doctor right away. TB can be treated with antibiotics, but it is important to start treatment as soon as possible to prevent the disease from spreading.
