How to Take Care of Anal Fissures

Fissures, or tears in the lining of the anus or anal canal where stool passes from the body, may cause pain and bleeding. Diagnosed by a doctor using the tips of his fingers, fissures usually are caused by trauma. They are treated by lowering the pressure on the anal canal, soaking in a warm bath, cleansing the area gently and avoiding unnecessary straining.

Instructions

    • 1

Consult a health care professional for a proper diagnosis and treatment options, especially if excessive bleeding and pain occur.

    • 2

Avoid constipation. Straining to empty the bowel can cause fissures and often makes them more painful and difficult to heal. Drink plenty of water and avoid caffeine, which tends to dehydrate. Increase the amount of fiber in your diet. Use stool softeners if necessary and recommended.

    • 3

Manage diarrhea. Obtain a prescription from a doctor or take an over-the-counter medication. Prolonged diarrhea can cause fissures.

    • 4

Do not stretch the anal area or insert foreign objects, which can tear and damage tissue. Steer away from anal sex. Allow the area to heal.

    • 5

Consider less common causes, such as cancer, HIV, tuberculosis and syphilis. Again: Consult your doctor.
