How to Treat Thick Toenails

Thick toenails can not only be unsightly, but they can also be indicative of other problems such as a fungal infection. Often thick toenails will also be slightly discolored. You may start with over-the-counter products to treat this problem, but you should see a doctor if it persists for more than three weeks. If the infection seems to be spreading or getting worse while using any over-the-counter remedy, you must see your doctor.

Instructions

    • 1

File the top of your toenail to roughen the surface. Use a cotton swab to apply two to three drops of tea tree oil on the affected toenail. The antifungal properties of tea tree oil make this a natural remedy for toenail fungus.

    • 2

Apply a thick coating of Vicks VapoRub to the affected toe and cover with a sock before going to bed. When you wake in the morning, shower as usual. Continue with this process until the toenail improves, which could take up to 180 days. Visit your doctor if you notice the infection spreading or getting worse during treatment. Vicks VapoRub contains antifungal ingredients such as eucalyptus oil and thymol.

    • 3

Soak your feet in Listerine four times daily for two to three weeks. Listerine contains thymol, which has antifungal properties that can work against toenail fungus.

    • 4

Visit your doctor to discuss prescription medications to treat your toenail fungus. Untreated toenail fungus can spread to other toenails and worsen, causing your toenail to separate from your skin.
