Cycling and Foot Problems

Cycling is an excellent cardiovascular activity. It can get your blood pumping and burn those calories. However, there is the possibility of injury, especially near the soles of the feet and the knees, where the most pressure is applied. Here's how to avoid foot problems as you pedal your way around town:
  1. Pinched Nerves, Inflamed Muscles and hot feet

    • A host of foot problems can crop up with constant cycling. It can lead to pinched nerves, a condition that causes pain to radiate through the feet. If the soles of your gym shoes aren't well padded enough, the pedal can place intense pressure on the ball of your foot, making walking a painful process. Inflamed muscles, numbness and burning feet are other associated problems. This can be healed by treating with ice, complete rest and pain-relieving medication.

    Protect Your Feet

    • If you cycle regularly, you need to protect your feet from wear and tear. The best way to do this is to buy good-quality gym shoes, with a firm base and thickly padded cushions under the balls of the feet. Select from a range of shoes that have been designed for racing, hiking and mountain biking. It should be a good, comfortable fit but not too tight.

    Avoid Common Cycling Errors

    • Place your feet firmly on the pedals. To prevent tenderness in the heel, adjust the seat in sync with your height and the length of your legs. You should be able to easily pedal without having to twist or turn in the seat. This can help you avoid pain, tenderness and chronic swelling.
