Safe Ways to Disinfect
Safe disinfecting techniques can benefit the health of homeowners and their pets, as well as save the environment from constant exposure to harmful chemicals. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) keeps track of many organic compounds found within common household cleaners, which can contribute to irritation, nausea, and even permanent damage to the nervous system. Luckily, there are many safe methods to disinfect around the house without relying on chemical-heavy cleaners.-
All-Purpose Cleaner
-
One of the most essential cleaners used on the majority of home surfaces is the basic "all purpose" cleaner. It is used on many areas, including counter tops, appliances, bathrooms and walls. To create a safe disinfectant, combine two tablespoons of white vinegar with one tablespoon of borax within a 16 ounce spray bottle. Fill the rest of the bottle with hot water and shake until the borax dissolves. Once completed, add a quarter cup of liquid soap. Scents---such as oils, lemon and lavender---can be added for desired smells. Simply apply this mixture to surfaces and wipe away.
Glass and Bathroom Cleaner
-
A simple glass cleaner can be created from club soda and lemon juice. Simply place club soda within a spray bottle. Add one tablespoon of lemon juice to increase the degreasing power. This can be applied and wiped from any glass surface. A bathroom cleaner can be created with only a few common household items. Mix a half a cup of baking soda with liquid soap until it reaches a consistency that is similar to frosting. Follow this by adding five to 10 drops of a fragrance oil. Using a scrubber, this combination effectively cleans tiles within showers.
Toilet Cleaner & Mold Remover
-
One of the most unfortunate tasks of homeowners is toilet cleaning. Luckily, an effective toilet cleaner can be made by sprinkling baking soda and borax into the toilet. Another alternative treatment is pouring vinegar in the bowl. Each should be allowed to sit for a few minutes, followed by scrubbing with a toilet brush. For mold found within the home, removal can be performed with a mixture of half a cup of hydrogen peroxide combined with one cup of water. Spray the concoction on the mold; after sufficient soaking, the mixture can be reapplied, followed by a scrubbing.
