Free Grants for the Disabled

For disabled Americans, both young and old, the federal government offers grants and programs to help them in their journey towards a successful, fulfilling life. Disabled individuals also can seek financial assistance from some private businesses and nonprofit organizations.
  1. Able Trust Grants

    • Florida's Able Trust offers a variety of grants geared towards stripping away the obstacles facing disabled Floridians seeking employment. Though the Able Trust is open to a variety of proposals, it does adhere to a few basic guidelines. According to its website, abletrust.org, grant seekers must be "either governmental agencies or currently qualified as tax exempt," and grant applications "must serve the employment needs of individuals with disabilities by a qualifying non-profit organization in the state of Florida and lead to their employment in the grant year." For more information about grant opportunities or to see past examples of successful grant proposals visit abletrust.org.

    MEAF/AAPD Congressional Internship Program

    • The Mitsubishi Electric America Foundation (MEAF), in conjunction with the American Association of People with Disabilities (AAPD), began in 2002 a Washington D.C.-based internship program for college students with disabilities. The MEAF website states that the "eight-week summer program ... annually provides students with disabilities opportunities to learn about the legislative and political process by working hands-on in Congressional offices in Washington D.C." According to the website, between 2008 and 2010, MEAF and AAPD donated $284,000 to the internship program. Students in the internships write policies and present speeches and study judicial law. • For veterans with disabilities, the United States Department of Veterans Affairs, under the Veterans Benefits Administration, offers the Automobiles and Adaptive Equipment for Disabled Veterans and Servicemembers Grant. According to govbenefits.gov, this VA grant provides up to $11,000 "towards the purchase of an automobile or other transportation," for qualified veterans. The grant will also pay for any special equipment required for the disabled veterans' specific needs. In order to qualify, veterans must be missing or unable to use at least one hand or foot or must have irreparable serious vision impairment in both eyes. Veterans must also have sustained these injuries in the line of duty. For more information visit www.govbenefits.gov.
