Signs of Tendinitis in Arm

Your muscles are attached to your bones with pieces of tissue called tendons. Sometimes, these tendons can become damaged in some way which leads to a condition called tendinitis. Tendinitis is very common in the arm, because your arm can be injured by repetitive motion. If you think you may have tendinitis, there are several things you should look for to determine if you need to see a doctor.
  1. General Pain

    • You may feel a general pain in the area around the tendon. There may be no outward symptoms at this point, but you will feel a dull ache deep in the muscle tissue. The pain may feel like a dull muscle ache, but it is actually coming from the tendon under the muscle. This should be the warning sign that something is wrong and you should stop whatever activity you are performing using your arm.

    Restricted Movement

    • After the initial pain, you may begin to experience restricted movement in your arm. This will manifest a bit like a sore muscle, but the pain will be much more intense. In some cases you will be unable to move your arm past a certain point. This limited mobility will continue to increase as time goes on accompanied by an increase in pain.

    Tenderness

    • If the tendinitis continues to go untreated, your arm will begin to feel tender to the touch. To start, this symptom only occurs when the arm is under any kind of pressure. However, after a period of time, the tenderness will begin to worsen and you will experience it throughout the day regardless if the arm has any pressure on it.

    Burning Sensation

    • In a few cases, patients have complained of a burning sensation in the arm where the tendinitis occurs. This burning sensation will increase in intensity as time goes on. Usually this intensity will be felt in the early morning and late evening hours and after any kind of exercise using your arms. As the tendinitis progresses, this burning sensation will begin to occur after something as simple as lifting a box.

    Swelling

    • If this condition is not treated by a physician, the tendon will begin to get a red discoloration, become swollen and feel lumpy. This is due to the buildup of fluid in the tendon and general inflammation. This symptom is cause for serious concern and you should get medical attention before more serious permanent damage occurs.
