Central Cause of Pes Planus
Pes planus, more commonly known as "flat feet," is a condition in which the arch of the foot collapses and comes into contact with the ground.-
Causes
-
Pen planus is a common condition that can develop in any stage in life. In infants and toddlers, arches are not developed, and flat feet are normal; by childhood arches should be fully developed. In adults, it is possible for arches to fall. The tendons that shape the arch can weaken naturally after a period of time. Inflammation and injury can also cause fallen arches and harm the tendons.
Prognosis
-
Generally, flat feet don't cause any problems and are painless, notes Medline Plus. For painful flat feet, the cause of the condition should be determined by a physician.
Symptoms
-
Some people have no signs or symptoms of the condition. In other cases, foot pain, disappearance of the foot arch when standing, and the heel tilting away from the midline of the body are common symptoms, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center.
Diagnosis
-
A thorough examination of the foot is sufficient to diagnose pes planus. In cases where pain is present, a physician may order x-rays.
Treatment
-
People with flat feet who do not experience pain do not require treatment. In cases where pes planus is painful, a physician my recommend an anti-inflammatory medication, shoe inserts, a pain medication or, in more severe cases, surgery.
