Distinguish between medical and environmental causes of nail peeling. Medical conditions occur when fungus and bacteria enter the nail and cause disintegration of the nail, discoloration and peeling. Environmental causes of peeling usually occur when fingers are repeatedly exposed to water or harsh chemicals (such as cleaning solutions and dish soap). Different treatments are required for each type of condition.

Consult a dermatologist for medical conditions. The nail diseases and disorders reference has photos and descriptions of various conditions, each of which have different treatment regiments. Some conditions, such as a fungal or yeast infection, can be treated with over-the-counter anti-fungal preparations containing clotrimazole and terbinafine. Apply as directed to the affected area.

Look to your environment to determine if your peeling nails is a non-medical condition. If you are immersing your hands in water frequently, wear rubber gloves. Use environmentally friendly cleaning products and, again, wear gloves to prevent the chemicals from getting on your nails. If your nails only peel in winter, low humidity in your home is probably the cause. Invest in a humidifier to keep rooms from becoming too dry.

Apply jojoba oil to the affected nails four times a day to help your body repair peeling nails. Vitamin E oil can also be used. These oils will help your nails stay hydrated.
