How to Apply a Figure Eight Shoulder Immobilizer

A figure eight shoulder immobilizer, also called a clavicle splint, is a flexible cloth device designed to limit mobility of injured areas. It is also sometimes used as a device to improve posture. The figure eight immobilizer is typically recommended for patients with severe shoulder and clavicle injuries. It derives its name from the design of the device which has two loops that fit around each arm. Figure eight shoulder immobilizers can be worn under or over clothing.

Instructions

    • 1

Insert the left arm through the left loop of the device, just as if you are putting on a shirt or jacket. Pull the loop completely up the arm until it sits on the left shoulder.

    • 2

Insert the right arm into the right loop of the device and move the loop up until it sits on the right shoulder.

    • 3

Adjust each shoulder strap until they are positioned in the very center of each shoulder, also known as the clavicle region.

    • 4

Grab the left Velcro closure strap which is hanging below the left arm and pull it up towards the shoulder until it is snug. Press the strap firmly against the piece already around the left shoulder to secure it.

    • 5

Grab the right Velcro closure strap which is hanging below the right arm and pull it up towards the shoulder until it is snug. Press the strap firmly against the piece already around the right shoulder to secure it.
