Receiving an electrical shock can result in anything from mild impairment to death. It is important to use all safety precautions to avoid electrical exposure.

    • An electrical shock is received when electricity passes through the human body. The higher the voltage received the more damaging the injury to the body.

    • Depending on the amount of electricity received and the amount of time the current passed through the body, injuries can range from a faint tingle to a painful shock. Injuries include loss of muscle control, cardiac arrest, burns and nerve damage at the point of contact.

    Hidden Injuries

    • Although there may be no visible burn, it is possible for tissues, nerves and muscles to be damaged. Sometimes healthy tissue hides the extent of the injuries.

    Electric Shock Pathways

    • The pathway of the electric shock will determine the extent of the injury. Currents that run through the head and chest are the most dangerous. An electric shock to the head could damage the entire nervous system in the body.

    Electrical Safety

    • Do not work with electrical equipment if there is any possibility that there may be live wires. Do not touch someone who is receiving an electrical shock, as you will then receive one too. Call emergency medical personnel immediately if you or someone you know has received an electrical shock.
