Skin Care for Acne Scars

The skin is the body's largest organ and the body's first defense against hazardous substances. It protects the bloodstream, the internal organs and bacteria from entering the body. Acne can cause mild to severe scars depending on the intensity of the condition. Taking good care of the skin after developing acne scars is crucial to encourage the skin to heal itself. Babying the skin and keeping it clean and well-balanced is essential in the process of treating acne scars.
  1. Maintain Moisture

    • Keep the skin moisturized and do not overwash the skin. Dry skin can accentuate the damage caused by acne, making the scarring process worse. After washing the face, do not completely dry the face. Pat the face dry, leaving it damp and immediately apply a moisturizer cream for optimum moisture absorption. In drier climates and seasons, apply moisturizer more often to keep the skin soft and supple. Run a humidifier as you sleep if you live in a very dry climate to keep the skin moisturized during the night hours. Do not overwash your face as this can severely dry the skin.

    Treat the Skin from Within

    • Treat the skin from within by drinking aloe vera juice. For general health, drink 2 oz. in the morning on a daily basis. People trying to baby the skin should drink 2 oz. twice a day. Aloe vera juice can moisturize the skin from the inside out. Combining the use of moisture on the inside and exterior can assist the skin in properly repairing itself. Olive oil can also help promote moisture within as well. Use 2 to 4 tbsp. daily on salads or in baking to achieve this goal.

    Avoid the Sun

    • Stay out of the sun whenever possible. The sun can increase breakdown in the skin, taking longer to heal the wound, causing the scar. Use sunscreen on a daily basis, even when you're not planning on being in the sun. Do not use tanning beds as they can dry out the skin and cause more damage. Go in the shade if you are outside for longer than 10 minutes.
