Characteristics of Cauliflower of the Ear

Cauliflower ear is a deformity that may occur when you suffer a hit to your ear. As cauliflower ear is usually the result of repeated hits to the ear, the condition is most common among wrestlers and boxers.
  1. Appearance

    • An ear afflicted with cauliflower ear appears puffy, lumpy or somewhat shriveled in places.

    Why it Occurs

    • Being hit on the ear can lead to the formation of a blood clot or may cause the skin on the outside of your ear to separate from the cartilage. Either of these occurrences can cut off the cartilage's blood supply; when the cartilage dies, it shrivels up, causing the ear to appear lumpy or puffy.

    Treatment

    • Treatment for cauliflower ear usually involves draining blood from the ear and applying a tight bandage to help the skin reconnect to the cartilage. Stitches or antibiotics may also be employed.

    Prognosis

    • Treatment for cauliflower ear is usually effective when performed within a few days of the injury. In some cases, however, the blood may return after draining. Plastic surgery may be an option for resolving the condition.

    Prevention

    • The best way to prevent cauliflower ear is to wear appropriate headgear when playing contact sports such as wrestling, boxing and football.
