How to Get Rid of Scars From Mole Removal

Moles are brown or skin-colored lesions that form on the body. Sometimes people have them removed because an unusual mole may be an indicator of skin cancer or even just because they think the mole is unsightly. In surgery, the area around the mole is numbed, and the mole is taken out. Like any other wound, this will leave a scar. Over time, scars lighten by themselves, but there are some things that you can do to help the process along and even eliminate scars in the long run.

Wait for the wound where the mole was once located to heal completely. There should be no scabs or openings when you start scar treatment. This could take anywhere from 3 weeks to a few months.

Apply a topical gel, such as Mederma, to the scar daily for the next few of months. Mederma has onion extract as one of the ingredients, which has been shown to reduce inflammation and stop the overproduction of collagen in a wound. Over time, this will help make your scar less noticeable, but it will not remove it completely.

Seek professional help if you are not satisfied with the results of using the over-the-counter topical medications. Surgical options available to you include dermabrasion, laser therapy and scar revision plastic surgery.
