Herbs for Scar Removal

Scars can be the result of severe acne, burns, sun damage or illnesses such as chicken pox. While there are medical methods, such as dermabrasian, by which the appearance of scars can be reduced---or even eliminated---there are also numerous herbal remedies that can produce such results, as well. By using herbs found in your neighborhood health food store, you can create and apply your own home remedies to reduce the appearance of scars you may have thought would require more serious medical treatment.
  1. Sandalwood Treatments

    • Make a paste by combining sandalwood powder and black gram dal (a bean similar to a lentil). After washing the area around your scar, apply the paste to the scar before going to bed. Allow the paste to remain on the scar overnight, and then wash it off with cold water in the morning. You can also make a paste from sandalwood and rose water, following the same directions for use. Both pastes can reduce---or even eliminate---the appearance of scars.

    Aloe Vera Treatments

    • Aloe vera plants are best used to treat new burns or newer acne scars, healing and moisturizing the skin and helping it to rapidly re-new itself. To use aloe, take an entire aloe leaf and cut it down the middle, removing and rinsing the aloe gel inside. Then apply the clean gel directly to the scar or burn. It should be noted that aloe vera has not been shown to reduce or remove old scars.

    Arjuna Treatments

    • Arjuna bark can also be used to treat scars, especially those that result from acne, when combined with honey to create a medicinal ointment. This ointment should be applied repeatedly over the problem area several times a day, for several days in order to obtain the desired healing effect. Arjuna bark helps to heal skin due to its medicinal healing and cooling properties.

    Margosa Treatments

    • Margosa tree leaves and sap have been found to be beneficial in treating numerous skin ailments, from simple pimple scarring to leprosy. You may crush the leaves to extract the margosa juice and apply it directly to the skin. Let the juice dry on the skin completely before washing it with cold water.
