How to Treat Coral Wounds

People who swim in the ocean sometimes come in contact with coral and get coral scrapes or wounds. There are some techniques for treating coral wounds which may save you a trip to the hospital. But if the wound does not heal properly, seek medical attention as soon as possible. Left untreated, these wounds can be life-threatening.

  • Soap
  • Water
  • Hydrogen peroxide
  • Bacitracin ointment
  • Non-adherent dressing
  • Tweezers
  • Gloves

      Clean the wound with soap and water. Then pour hydrogen peroxide mixed with water on the wound. Make sure to remove any coral debris from the wound gently with tweezers. Look over the wound carefully to make sure it is clean. Repeat Step 1 as needed until there is no sign of dirt or debris in the wound.

      Gently cover the wound with a thin layer of bacitracin ointment using a Q tip. Then cover with a non-adherent dressing. Change the dressing three times per day. Be sure to use a dressing that will not stick to the wound and cause bleeding, which would make it take longer to heal.

      Check the wound every time you change the dressing. If you notice pus, swelling or if it is healing poorly, seek medical treatment immediately.
