How to Properly Wear a Walking Cast
A walking cast is a special kind of leg cast designed to allow the wearer to walk normally while the cast takes the pressure and protects the injured area. While walking casts are often permanent and made of plaster, they may also come in the form of detachable plastic braces. Both types of casts need to be worn properly to ensure comfort and effectiveness.Things You'll Need

Plaster Casts

1
Make sure the bottom of the cast is well-protected. Always wear a protective shoe when walking outdoors or on hard surfaces.
-
2
Keep the cast dry. Avoid walking in wet areas and cover the cast with a double coating of plastic bags attached with rubber bands when bathing or showering.
-
3
Avoid putting stress on the cast. Don't use your cast to prop doors or rest heavy objects on. Check the cast daily for any cracks, and return to your doctor to have it repaired if you see any.
Detachable Casts

4
Make sure the cast fits you correctly. While the velcro straps are adjustable, the molded plastic portions are not, so make sure the plastic of your cast is the right size for your leg to fit comfortably without being too tight or leaving extra space.
-
5
Attach the cast snugly, but not too tightly. Pull the straps just tight enough to keep the cast from moving on your leg as you walk.
-
6
Walk heel to toe and stand normally. Detachable brace walking casts are designed for normal standing postures, distributing weight evenly across the entire sole of the foot. When walking, land on your heel and roll forward to your toe with each step.
