Proper Procedure for Using the Hoyer Lift
The Hoyer lift is a portable hydraulic mechanism used often for patients who cannot carry their weight because of amputation or physical limitations. It elevates the patient with a sling and helps move him to a toilet, bathtub, wheelchair or some other nearby location. Since Hoyer was one of the first companies to use it, total body lifts are now commonly referred to by this trade name. They are very useful for aiding disabled individuals, and there are a few procedures that should be followed in operating the Hoyer lift.-
Precautions
-
Make sure that the lift can handle the patient's weight by checking its weight capacity. Remove any obstacles in the way of the lift so that the patient can easily be transferred.
First Step
-
The patient and the sling should be positioned in order to keep the patient properly aligned throughout. The patient should keep her arms crossed while on the lift. Shift the patient to her side and place the sling under her body. Attach the sling to the chains, and adjust the sling so that the weight is evenly distributed on the sling.
Transferring the Patient
-
Raise the lift by holding the lift valve. The patient's head and other extremities should be monitored to make sure they doesn't get bumped. Lower the lift by releasing the lift valve slowly. Remove the sling chains. You have successfully transferred the patient. Remember to discuss the transfer with the patient to make sure she felt that it was comfortable and safe.
