How to Keep Your Nose From Continuing to Bleed
Most people who get nose bleeds can stop them without the help of a physician. The most common cause of bleeding is dry nasal membranes. Some people have thin membranes, which can account for more frequent nose bleeds during dry seasons. Other causes for nose bleeds include getting hit in the nose or scraping the inside of the nose. Someone with recurring bleeding should see a medical doctor to make sure it is not caused by a more serious condition.Things You'll Need
- Facial tissue
- Cold compress
- Petroleum Jelly
- Cotton swab
- Humidifier (optional)
Instructions

Stop Bleeding
-
1
Pinch the soft part of the nostrils together between the thumb and index finger, using a tissue to catch any excess blood.
-
2
Hold the nose firmly toward the face for about five minutes.
-
3
Lean forward while holding the nose, but do not bend over. Keep the head at a higher level than the heart and do not lay down. Do not lean the head back, causing the blood to run back into the sinuses and down the throat.
-
4
Sit still. Slow the heart rate to an at-rest rate.
-
5
Apply a cold compress to the face around the nose.
Prevent Further Bleeding
-
6
Rest the head (without laying down flat), and the rest of the body. Only perform tasks that require little physical effort and movement.
-
7
Eat foods that are easy to chew. Stick with cool or cold foods for about 24 hours, avoiding hot drinks and foods.
-
8
Put the cigarettes away. Smoking irritates nasal membranes.
Avoid Future Nose Bleeds
-
9
Apply lubricating ointment at least once a day if the nose feels dry or itches. Dip the cotton end of a swab into the ointment, then move it very gently around the inside of each nostril. Do not plug the nostril with ointment. If the swab used too roughly, it could tear the nasal membrane and cause more bleeding.

10
If the climate is dry, use a humidifier in the home or in the bedroom at night. A humidifier will put moisture into the air, helping to prevent middle-of-the-night or morning nose bleeds.
-
11
Protect the nose by not bumping or rubbing it. Use care when blowing the nose by not yanking or being too rough.
