How to Treat Infections With a Restylane Injection

Restylane is FDA-approved for the treatment of moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds. It is injected into the area that needs to be plumped, causing the wrinkle or crease to be less noticeable. Because it is applied using a needle with multiple injections, there is a risk of infection.

  Watch for signs of infection. It is very rare to get an infection after a Restylane injection. However, you may develop an infection at the injection site from bacteria on the skin that is then introduced into the site of injection. There is also the possibility of viral infection and the introduction of the herpes simplex virus when Restylane is injected around the mouth.

  To prevent a herpes infection, prior to injection take medication prescribed to reduce the chance of the virus, such as Valtrex. Consult your physician and obtain a prescription prior to your appointment for Restylane.

  Before the injection, wash your face and hands thoroughly with an antibacterial soap. Also be sure the health care professional administering the Restylane has washed her hands.

  Always make sure that the conditions of the medical spa or physician's office look clean and sanitary. Be sure that you personally see the box and vial that the Restylane was packaged in prior to application. Seeing it removed from the packaging helps to ensure you are getting the proper product.

  If you do get an infection from the injection, see your doctor. Antibiotics are usually prescribed as treatment for this type of infection.
